This week, the children will begin to explore composition by focusing on the preliminary skills: the concept of ‘wholes’ and ‘parts’. By investigating their own bodies and familiar toys they will begin to understand that whole things are often made up of smaller parts and that a whole is, therefore, bigger than its parts.

You can practice at home by looking at different objects or toys around the house that are made up of different parts, exploring how many parts make the whole object. You can also use the video link below.

You can practice at home by using household objects such as fruit, pens, pencils, etc., and matching them equally to your favourite toys (teddies, cars, action figures, princesses, etc.).

Use the Fairy Tale Party PowerPoint below to match the cupcakes to each guest equally.

This week, the children will begin to compare quantities. The activities this week will focus on developing this innate skill as children are encouraged to look carefully and use the language of comparison to describe sets of objects that they can see. They will begin to use language such as 'more than' and 'fewer than'.

Use the resources below to support your children with their maths this week.

Week commencing 25.09.23

This week, we will continue to learn about how to take care of our bodies by focusing on oral hygiene. We will look closely at how to brush our teeth correctly and how to choose healthier foods and drinks for our teeth.

You can also support your children at home with this by encouraging them to brush their teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes and by encouraging them to make better choices with their food and drinks. Use the songs below to support the children when brushing their teeth.

Sound of the week:

Our sound of the week this week is 'ck'. This sound is a digraph which is 2 letters that only make 1 sound. We call these friendly letters as they hold hands and appear mostly at the end of a word. Use the website links below to encourage your children to practice their blending skills.

The children will also be introduced to the tricky word 'to'. Use the video below to help your children to practice writing this word at home.

Maths:

This week, the children will build on their subitising skills (saying the amount they can see without counting). They will continue to use ‘perceptual’ subitising – instant recognition – by saying the number of sounds that they can hear, such as claps or drum beats, without needing to count. Use the video below to practice subitising at home.

Week commencing 18.09.23

Our focus this week is learning to take care of our bodies. We will be looking closely at personal hygiene and managing germs. As the runny noses and sneezes have begun in Reception, we are supporting the children with their own personal hygiene.

You can also support your children at home by encouraging them to wash their hands, use tissues when they have a runny nose, and by catching their coughs and sneezes in their elbow. Below is a song all about hand washing for children.
