Maths 22.1.21

For today’s lesson I have attached an interactive tens frame for the children to explore and write the different number parts to 10. Can they independently remember any from memory. By the end of the year in reception the expectation is that children will be able to recall all number bonds by memory so the more practise we have the better and soon they will see the patterns in the numbers. Don’t forget to practise writing these number sentences down.

https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/tenFrame/index.html

It is important that the children have a deep understanding of all the numbers to ten so I would like you to log on to your ten town and try and focus on a different number each day or few says and complete the different activities and games for each number.

Freestyle Friday!!

As Mrs Hackney is conscious how much extra screen time the children are having I am proposing where possible to use Friday afternoons as an opportunity to turn the screens off and spend some fun quality time together.

If you can complete your activities in the morning then why not use the afternoons to make crafts, get physical, go for a walk, bake and make some memories together where this is possible. I will put up some suggested activities but please feel free to use your own and share your ideas.

Morning input

Mrs Hackney would like to start the day with a story. We are very passionate about using stories to promote a love of reading but also for promoting and increase in communication, language and understanding.

Please share this story together and here are some points to consider when talking to your child about the book:

Do they understand what is being read to them?

Why does the hedgehog need an umbrella?

What problem is the mole faced with a the beginning of the story?

Can the children name all the characters in the story (animals), who is the main character?

What happened at the beginning, end of the story? Can they predict what might happen?

Why not get outside today and get some fresh air and see if you can find any wet puddles to jump in….rainy day adventure anyone? This can even be done in your garden do not be afraid of the weather have fun with it!!

https://youtu.be/Ds6lsCVWZ3w

Below is also a game where the children can dress the puppy for the weather. Again encourage lots of talking throughout the activity asking those why and how questions with your children.

Phonics 14.1.21

Below is today’s phonics lesson. I do require some help parents for the children to take part in this activity. Is it possible they can have some paper to write on. Also they will need the tricky words all, they, the, you, my and he. You can either use the cards from the key ring or write these out for the children. The children are also going to make the word so can you right the words out for them and cut them up into individual letters so the children can make the word by putting them back together.

The idea is to do some different with the tricky words, they will read the word, make the word and write the word.

Thank you for your support parents I feel the children will enjoy taking part in this activity with me.

Week beginning 7.12.2020

This week we are looking closely at the story of “The Jolly Christmas Postman”

We have turned our role play area into a Post Office for all the letters that will be sent off to Santa and his elves!

The children will be learning about what a postman or post lady do for their job and the things they need to complete it. We will be using our phonics to write letters to Santa this week also!!

Top Tip!

We have noticed that as the children are writing and forming their letters many of them are starting in the wrong place and therefore forming the letters incorrectly. We are asking for your help at home. When you are watching or supporting your child with writing please ensure they start in the correct place. If they don’t model this for them and ask them to have another go. Many letters start at the top but a lot of the children are starting their letters form the bottom to the top especially tall letters.

The Jolly Christmas Postman read by Santa please click below

Below are some Jolly Postman home learning challenges

Maths

This week we are looking closely at positional language and using the story and the Postman’s route to learn how to use and understand these words.

The words we will be focusing on are

in          on       under      next to     above       below

                         behind                       in front

For understanding of these words we have been using beanbags, balls and dough and placing them in various places using the song below:

(You can use any objects you have at home)

Put Your Beanbag Song

Once your child is showing a good understanding of what these words mean you could try the power point below where your child needs to say and use the correct positional language in  “Where is teddy?”

Tricky Words of the week

 all

We will focus on the words all, my and you throughout the week

Maths

This week the children we be looking closely at exploring pattern. We will be looking at Rangoli patterns and how we can recreate them in a variety of ways.

Below are some games you may wish to play with your children to support their learning and understanding around pattern.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/ordering-and-sequencing/shape-patterns

https://www.education.com/game/roly-pattern-quiz/

We continue to dig deeper looking at numbers to 5. We are ensuring children have a good understanding of what a number looks like physically with objects, what is 1 more and 1 less than that the number. We are looking at what is more and less than that number.

We are also beginning to look at what the numbers are made up of. For example number 3 is made up of different numbers.

We are working on counting, ordering and the writing of numbers to 10. We are sing songs and gross motor movements to support the children in this.

Story of the week 9.11.2020

This week we are looking closely at the city of London. This follows on from our discussions ans learning about Guy Falkes last week. We will be looking at the famous landmarks and take a close look and who lived in the city. We will look at the Queen and the Royal family and why people choose to live there.

The children will be using their creative skills this week to create their own famous London Landmark using recyclable materials. They will learn how to join and assemble materials as well as adapt their work.

The children will also have a chance to explore our new curiosity station which has famous landmarks and stories all about London.

In RE this week we will be learning all about Remembrance. The children will be making their own poppies and contributing to a whole class display. If you would like to support your child in their understanding of Remembrance this child friendly video is a good starting point. Please click on the link below.

Maths

This week in Numeracy we are exploring the mathematical vocabulary “Tall” and “Short”. The children will be learning to compare sizes of height and start to use this vocabulary in their play. The children will be using unifix cubes to create different sized towers and comparing the quantity of blocks they have used. The children will also learn how to measure objects simply by using these cubes and say how many cubes tall something is.

Below is a link to a game where children can demonstrate their understanding of the new vocabulary.

EYFS Maths Comparison Chilli Challenges Zoo Animals Number Comparison

To look at comparing numbers concentrate on numbers 1-5.  Pick a number and focus on this i.e 3

Explain to the children that to the left of the number 3 are numbers/amounts  that are lower- in the middle are amounts that are the same and the right hand side  numbers/amounts that are more than 3.

The children can either make amounts or write the numbers.  It’s all about looking at numbers closely and comparing them with others they may see this as the number or they can make the amount using objects.

Story of the week 5.10.20

This week we are continuing to learn about how to look after ourselves and exploring fruit and where it is grown. We are going on an adventure to Africa to explore what life is like there and also which fruit we eat that is grown there.

We will be learning the names of different fruits and more excitingly we will be using these fruits in our fruit salad at the end of the week!!

Tricky Words

we       me    the    into     be

This week the new tricky word we are looking it is be. We are practising reading and writing these words. The children particularly are struggling to remember to spell and write the words the and into so it would be helpful if these could be practised at home.

Wow what a week of learning take a look at the photographs below to see what we have been getting up to when learning about vegetables.

The children have loved role playing in the Vegetable shop, we have also started to grow our own carrot tops!!!

The children have also enjoyed exploring the outside where we grow our own apple trees. The children enjoyed eating fresh apples form the trees!

Stories of the week

This week we are looking more closely at how and where vegetables grow using the story of “Oliver’s Vegetables.” We will be learning the names of different vegetables and looking at the different environments in which they will grow such as gardens and farms. Please send us any photographs via email if you grow your own vegetables at home.

The children will also continue on learning how to keep themselves healthy as we look at oral health with the book Give us a smile Cinderella. We will be looking at the importance of brushing our teeth and why that it important. We will also be looking at which foods are best for our teeth and which foods and drinks to eat less.

Please send videos or photographs of the children cleaning their teeth at home via the email or tapestry so we can discuss this at school.

Maths

This week we are exploring the Number 7. Every time we look at a number we now look at it in the number line and look what is more than and 1 less than.

This week we will be making amounts of 7 but we will also be using our new vegetable supermarket to role play buying and adding shopping to their basket.

We will be finding 1 more than up to 10 and some children will begin to different amounts in shopping baskets. We will be comparing numbers using the language of “more”  “Less” “Fewer than” and combining groups to find the totals.

Below are some useful hints and tips on how to support your child with understanding mathematical concepts.

Tricky words of the week:

 we,         me,        be

Please continue to practise reading and writing I, to, no, go, the and into. However we are now moving onto phase 3 high frequency words. We are looking to help the children to read these words and also write them from memory.

Sounds of the Week:

 CK         SS

This week we are exploring something new with the children. We will be introducing a new sound called a digraph. A digraph has 2 letters but only makes one sound. We will discuss that these sounds are friendly letters and like to hold hands in a word so stay together.  We will explain that when we hear these sounds in words they will usually come at the end of a word. For example, we will be exploring words and helping the children to blend to read:

sock,  back,  sick, duck                         mess,    kiss,   hiss,  miss

Story of the Week

Wk beginning 21st September

This week we are looking closely at this twisted fairy tale to help us learn about how we can stay healthy.

We are learning the names of lots of different vegetables and how they are good for our bodies. We are going to be cooking and tasting vegetables and making a tasty vegetable soup! We are going to look at how materials change and make jelly with fruit for a special treat at the end of the week.

We will be looking at what we can do to contribute to good health and understanding the difference between healthy and unhealthy.

Maths

In Numeracy this week we are continuing to work on numbers to 10. We are learning to consistently touch count and count out from a large group to make different amounts.

Please continue to teach your children to count backwards as this will help them with the concept of taking away and finding 1 less than.

This rhyme is useful in supporting this, encourage your child to use their fingers to show the answer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSC-gHBU_d0

We will also be looking closely at pattern. We will be looking at animal patterns, and patterns on clothes and things in the home. Can you child spot different patterns in their bedroom? Living room? Do you have something that is spotty?, stripey? Wavy?

We will be looking at repeating patterns using colour to begin with. Can your child tell you the colour that comes next in a two colour pattern? 3 colour pattern?

You can use the link below to practise recognising pattern and seeing if you can find the next colour

Allow your child to practise reading and writing these new words (don’t forget to keep practising your phase 2 tricky words each week, especially writing them)

Story of the Week

This week we have chosen a “Fairy tale gone wrong” a twist on the “Three Little Pigs”. Big Bad has got a cold and all he wants is a tissue!!!

This has been a great story to get the children to think about germs and their personal hygiene.

The children will be learning all about germs and how we can stay healthy, looking after ourselves and each other.

The children this week in Numeracy will be focusing on finding 1 less than up to 10 using Seal Six from “Ten Town” to help us.

We will be singing lots of songs where the children are learning to count backwards and take away 1 each time. Please click on the links below to practise a few of the children’s favourites this week.

Story of the Week

We are beginning the school year with a familiar story to the children.

We will be focusing on story structure, setting, characters and retelling using new vocabulary.

The children will have opportunities to create art work from the story and use materials for collage as well as tools such as hole punches and split pins to create moving characters.

We are learning how to use our sounds to label characters and working really hard on writing our names focusing on correct letter formation.

In Maths this week we have been recapping our numbers to 10 and learning to count out and represent these different quantities.

We are so proud of the children, they have been amazing!!!
